This new era saw the sad demise of the once mighty Midland Railway. All rail traffic ended on 23 December 1968, and the work required to fulfill the project was immense. All tracks had to be removed and the station at Butterley had been demolished. A 100ft high slag heap dominated the area - the scars of which can still be seen today.
