The Midland Railway itself originated in 1832 and formed at first in Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire, with the purpose of serving the needs of the local coal owners. Around this time, the country’s rail system was not universally owned nor did it follow any strict rules in unison with tracks across the country - it eventually took the Gauge Act of 1846 to be introduced to make sure the trains ran on the same sort of rails.
